History of Coralville



The city we know as Coralville today began to grow in about 1843 after the construction of the local dam. It was during this time that several mills were built in the area drawing a large number of settlers to the tiny town. By the early 1870s, Coralville had grown to around 300 people.

At this time, the town consisted of little more than a general store, a meat market, several mills, a lumber yard, four saloons, a blacksmith's shop and a wagon shop. Coralville was incorporated as a city in 1873 and named after the fossilized coral that was often found near the local mills.
